Children's Classes

Head Instructor Erik Lee is an energetic and engaging instructor that connects with kids through humor and enthusiasm. His primary goal is to create kids who are happy, healthy, and durable.

Office Manager and Assistant Coach, Maria Young, is a 700 hour certified yoga instructor who earned her black belt through Erik and won a Grand Championship in the WKSA tournament.

After years of training, Erik Lee has created his LockBoxing curriculum which offers his students a solid foundation in all Mixed Martial Art skills as well as traditional forms or "hyung".

This program is designed to meet three times per week (one class for forms & falling, one class for techniques and target striking, and one class for sparring.)

We recommended that children begin training between six and eight years old. This headstart allows students to build coordination and comprehension skills that will aid them in many athletic and academic endeavors.

As students go up in rank, their options for class times increase.

Each class begins with a gesture of respect. The bow is used to honor those who trained before us and passed their knowledge down to us.
Before training, the instructor usually starts with a “pep talk” that includes reciting The Student Creed:

1. I will respect myself and others.

2. I will learn martial arts to connect my body, mind, and spirit.

3. I will pay attention in class so that I may learn.

4. I will use martial arts techniques only in self-defense.

5. The more you sweat the better you get.

6. The more you know the further you'll go.

7. I will arrive early to become quick and burly.

During these brief discussions, the instructor focuses the children’s attention on the intent of the class or lesson of the day. Very often, the instructor will remind the children that, “At school or on the playground, the Kuk Sool student is usually the nicest kid around. He or she will shake your hand and say hello and never be a bully.”

This kind of positive reinforcement of good manners and a gentle nature becomes engrained in the child’s mind as a important characteristic of a true martial artist.

After a brief discussion, the children warm-up. Frequently a student will conduct the warm-up as this affords each child an opportunity to experience the satisfaction that comes with good leadership.

Next the class will study either basic kicking and punching, traditional forms, techniques, or falling principals (tumbling). Before interacting with one another, the students stand at attention and bow to their partner. This simple act reminds the student to act respectfully toward the person they are partnering with. Furthermore, because the classes are mixed gender, boys and girls become comfortable interacting with one another throughout the pre-teen years.

Finally the class will bow out with gratitude and hope the traditions we study will be carried forward by the students who trained that day.

Many times parents are concerned that by studying a martial art their child may become more aggressive and use his or her new skills to hurt other children. To those parents we offer an invitation: come and see our students--they are well-behaved and respectful. They come to understand their own strength and how to use it properly. Often our students go on to do quite well in other sports and academics as well.

Additionally, families can train together Tuesdays/Thursdays at 6:30 in our "All: MMA Athletics" class...
